Hey Teresa,

I've actually received some rather angry feedback from people exclusively in the social media space based on this post. (Illustrating the point that they hide behind technology - not willing to have a discussion here.)

The point isn't to say that social media is useless, as I pointed out in my experience with Podcasting, it can provide some wonderful experiences and if leveraged properly can provide greater clarity of thought and word.

As I told a group at Elections Canada, if you want to know how to leverage these tools according to your corporate culture - sign up for twitter, for example, and experience how the tools are being used.

The middle ground between knowledge and experience is work. You have to be prepared to learn through trial and error to know how these tools may or may not benefit your business.

What a great article! My favorite part is: "In addition, many in this field don’t have the social skills to accomplish this goal so instead they hide behind the technology and bash others who disagree with them; not exactly the professional persona I’d want to engage with on projects."

Amen. Hallelujah. Agreed.

Thanks for shedding some light on how I, too, can become a new media douchebag.

Forever indebted,
Teresa Brazen

Thanks! :) Do you have similar experiences with "social media experts" in the Netherlands?

Another colleague of mine in South Africa sent me a note on twitter saying he could relate to this post.

There are several in Canada...

Cheers,
Jeff
